Things To Do and Places To Go – a Few Suggestions

Here are some suggestions for what to do while you are here  – We have put together some circular trips that take in a number of attractions and interesting drives. You can re combine them in a number of ways – if you need further input from us please do ask.

  • Drive the Abergwesyn Pass and up the Devils Staircase into the middle of nowhere / round the beautiful Llyn Brianne reservoir and maybe a walk at the RSPB Reserve / something scrummy to eat at the Royal Oak in Rhandirmwyn or the Tea Rooms next door / back via Llandovery and Cinghordy (yet another opportunity for amazing cakes)
  • Drive over the Eppynt to Brecon / visit the Cathedral (?12C Norman) / browse shops, art galleries and coffee shops / Have lunch at the Theatr Brycheiniog / take a trip on the Brecon Canal.
  • Take the 11am train on the Heart of Wales Railway Line to Llandeilo on the A483 and browse their shops and cafe’s – Llandeilo is as near to trendy as you will get in Mid Wales / take a 15 min walk out of town to Dinefwr Park and Castle and also visit the ‘hands on’ Newton House (National Trust) / catch the 7pm train back and have dinner at one of the 3 restaurants or 3 pubs in Llanwrtyd.
  • Drive south west towards Camarthen and visit the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (also National Trust) / drive back via Llyn Brianne and the Abergwesyn Pass providing you still have plenty of light to drive by – not recommended in the dark.
  • Visit The Hall at Abbey Cwm Hir – an interesting (and just slightly odd) victorian gothic manor house – be prepared to be bemused and amazed / go or come back via victorian Llandrindod Wells which has seen better days but has the best Health Food Shop in the world (sorry if I am biased)
  • The Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth is worth the 90 min drive if you are interested in energy saving DIY, organic gardening and the environment. It is quite inspiring. Machynlleth itself is a very pretty town and the Quarry Shop and Cafe are hard to resist.
  • Drive the Abergwesyn Pass to Tregaron then on to the Devils Bridge Falls / walk the nature trail / take a return steam train trip through the Vale of Rheidol to Aberystwyth/ come back via Rhayader.
  • Drive to Hay on Wye (town of books) via Painscastle and enjoy views of the Wye Valley/ visit Erwood Craft and Coffee Shop on the way/ come back via Llyswen and enjoy a small but perfect cream tea at Llangoed Hall (created by the Ashley family, as in Laura and Bernard.)
